Energy Stored in a Capacitor

Chapter-2|Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance| NCERT 12th Physics:

Energy Stored in a Capacitor:

The energy of a charged capacitor is measured by the total work done in charging the capacitor to a given potential. The work done in charging the capacitor is stored as its electrical potential energy.

Let we consider a capacitor of capacitance C. Initial its two plates are uncharged. let we have to move small positive charges from one plate and transfer them to the other plate. let potential difference be Vⁱ and charge is Qⁱ on positive plate of capacitor.

The total work done in transferring a charge Q from one plate to another.

Note:  Total energy stored in series combination or parallel combination of capacitors is equal to the sum of energy is stored in individual capacitors.

U = U₁+ U₂ + U₃ +………….+ Uₙ
