Temperature is the measure of degree of hotness or coldness of a body. The measurement of temperature of a body is a relative measure. We can consider three body with temperature T₁, T₂ and T₃, where T₁>T₂>T₃ then the body T₁ is called hotter one with respect to another one which is known as colder body.
Measurement Of Temperature
As temperature is a fundamental physical quantity and it need measurement. The measurement of temperature is done by some specific scales. These scales are commonly called thermometers. The Thermometers are calibrated so that a numerical value maybe assigned to a given temperature.
It measures the temperature of the body in the unit as Kelvin(K), degree centigrade(⁰C), degree Fahrenheit(⁰F) and Reaumur(⁰R) etc. Among which Kelvin is taken as the SI unit of the temperature.
As we know two reference points are needed to define any standard scale. In case of water these points are Ice point and steam point at which the pure water freezes and boils respectively under standard pressure.
The ice and steam point of water are 32 ⁰F and 212 ⁰F on fahrenheit scale and 0 ⁰C and 100 ⁰C on Celsius scale.
On the Celsius scale there are 100 equal intervals between two reference points (i.e ice and steam point) while on the fahrenheit scale they are 180.
