Definition Of Science and Physics

Science

The word science originated from the Latin verb Scientia, meaning to know. In Sanskrit word Vijnan, similar meaning namely knowledge.

Science is a systematic attempt to understand natural phenomena in as much detail and depth as possible and use the knowledge so gained to predict, modify and control phenomena. Science is exploring, experimenting and predicting from what we see around us.

Steps involved in scientific method are

1. Systematic observation.

2. Controlled experiment.

3. Qualitative and quantitative reasoning.

4. Mathematical modelling.

5. Prediction and verification or falsification of theories.

Physics

Physics is a branch of science. The word physics comes from a Greek word meaning nature and in Sanskrit it is called bhautiki.

Thus, the word physics refers to the study of the physical world i.e the study of basic laws of nature and their magnifestation in different natural phenomena.

To study physics, we use two approaches which are as follows

1. Unification In Physics

In physics, we try to explain various physical phenomena in terms of just few concepts and laws. This approach is called unification in Physics.

Example:- Same law of gravitation is used to explain the motion of moon around the earth, motion of planets around the sun and falling of apple on the ground.

2. Reduction In Physics

In Physics, we also try to derive the properties of a bigger and complicated system from the properties and interactions of its constituent simpler parts. This approach is called reduction in Physics

Example:- Physical quantities like temperature and internal energy are used to deal with bulk system in Thermodynamics.
